Version or edition does not matter, networking is the same and fully compatible. If you are using a CD you will need to update it to the latest patch from https://worms2d.info/Latest.

All copies of Armageddon go to the same multiplayer network for online play. The games are functionally identical, though I think the Steam version has some minor changes here and there (eg potentially controversial voice-banks and flags removed, some text changed - you'd still see the flags if others have 'em, but any teams using voice-banks you don't have will use the default regional

You can leave half the worms as they are, as when you get the Jetpack utility you've enough jetpack fuel to get the crate and land safely. #6, also, you can just constantly use the worm on the right.
